Nishant Patel, MD, MBA
How, when and why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine?
My parents are both physicians and they urged me to go into medicine. Naturally, teenage me said I would never do so! I couldn’t separate myself from science, so began studying biochemistry. I realized that the daily variety and challenge of medicine was the perfect blend of science and humanities near the end of my first year in college, and I never looked back!
What do you like most about your job?
Interventional Radiology (IR) requires a strong core medical knowledge base, skills in imaging interpretation and most importantly the ability to keep a creative and open mind. I love that every case presents a unique challenge – often we must come up with a new solution to an old problem because each case is so different. IR also involves high level interactions with clinicians in every specialty and blends imaging with direct patient care, both of which are very satisfying on a daily basis.
What is your favorite way to spend free time (away from work)?
After getting sufficient sleep, I like cooking, traveling, playing sports (volleyball is my favorite), and lounging by the pool or beach. Electronic music is also therapeutic for me and is a fun way to spend free time – whether listening at home or going to a show!
What do you like most about working at RIA?
RIA has built a culture in which each employee seems to take great pride in his or her work. This is of utmost importance in a service industry like healthcare and was a huge draw for me when interviewing for a job. On top of that, there is great collegiality amongst the different subspecialty radiologists – this further enhances the quality of clinical work and makes going to work fun!
