Radiofrequency ablation of the thyroid is a minimally invasive procedure that treats thyroid nodules, which are lumps that form in your thyroid. These lumps may be solid or filled with fluid, and while many cause no symptoms, some can impact your appearance or ability to breathe. They can also cause hyperthyroidism.
It’s important to speak to your provider about thyroid nodules so they can ascertain whether there is a danger to your health. If removal is necessary, RFA is better able to target the growth while protecting your thyroid than other types of treatment.
Read below to see Dr. Nishant Patel's thoughts on the procedure:
"I became excited about the prospect of using radiofrequency for the ablation of thyroid nodules years ago while attending a European conference. It clearly is the way of the future - for benign nodules, avoiding further growth, unnecessary biopsies and eternal follow-ups, and treating disfiguring and symptomatic nodules while sparing the thyroid gland entirely; but I believe there is also great potential in “hot” nodules, recurrent malignancies and perhaps even primary malignancies in the right patient. I am grateful to have been introduced to the Alta RF system - it is truly simple to use, gives extremely helpful real-time feedback, and is easy to control by the operator. The results have spoken for themselves with an average of 70-75% nodule shrinkage in my patients at 3 months, all while having performed a procedure on an entirely outpatient basis in under one hour! Patients couldn’t be happier and referrals are lining up for this highly effective and safe procedure thanks to this RF technology."- Nishant Patel, MD
