Before I found Dr. Brown, I had been escorted off a ski mountain in February because I was in so much pain skiing. I then proceeded to find a solution, if there was one, to my pain. My radiation oncologist did a STAT Pet CT scan and MRI. It was determined after studying the test results, that no more radiation could be done. The radiation had weakened my bones causing fractures in my sacrum.
My radiation oncologist referred me to a pain doctor in Thornton. Since he was not in my network of doctors, I made an appeal to the insurance company and I was able to get him approved for a visit after waiting two weeks. Needless to say, I am in excruciating pain this entire time. This means that I cannot sleep in a bed, very difficult to sit down and get up and difficult to reach for a glass. Every movement was agony. I was thinking about suicide. My quality of life was gone.
When I finally got the appointment with doctor, he told me that he could not help me but he knew someone who could. He then referred me to Dr. Richard Coursey in Windsor, CO. Dr. Coursey was too busy to see me, so I made an appointment with his nurse practitioner. She didn’t have enough information because my scans had been lost in the process.
Knowing there were very few doctors that could do the procedure, I asked if she knew any doctors near Denver.
She thought that Dr. Tony Brown in Denver within their practice might be able to do the procedure. I then called the Denver RIA office and Mary answered the phone. At this point, I think the procedure is called sacroplasty with ablation. Mary realizes how much pain I am in and arranges a facetime call with Dr. Brown the next day. Dr. Brown sees my tests results and tells me he can help but he needs to bring in a second surgeon for the procedure, Dr. Daniel Lerman. However, it will take time to get both surgeons in the same room for two hours.
Finally on June 20th, after searching and waiting for 4 months, I barely make it physically into the operating room.
I cannot thank Dr. Brown and Mary enough for taking my phone calls and assuring me that they were doing everything possible to speed up the procedure. My quality of life is still not completely restored but I am grateful for “ No Pain”.
