Atul Gupta MD, FACR, Interventional Radiologist from Rochester, NY, shares his views on media perceptions of doctors and how we can educate ourselves and others on the role of radiologists in health care.
Many people get their image of doctors from TV shows like ER where the ED doctor or the surgeon does everything, including reviewing the imaging, and there is not a radiologist in sight. It might be from a personal experience where they or a family member was in the hospital, and they did not meet a radiologist. Much of the public doesn’t know who radiologists are, what they do and what role they play in their health care. Many don’t know that we are physicians and that we are an essential part of the health-care team and that we are the experts in imaging.
For this reason, the NYS Radiological Society has created short videos directed toward the public to educate about our education and training and our expertise in imaging and our role as part of the health-care team. This is particularly important, as non radiologists seek to increase their scope of practice. Please view the short videos in the links below and share them with your friends, family and patients.
Sincerely yours,
Atul Gupta, MD, FACR
