We spoke with Dr. Rich Coursey about RIA Endovascular’s unique ability in offering the technology to create non-surgical, minimally invasive fistulas for patients who need or will need dialysis or plasmapheresis.

At the beginning of this year I was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. As you can imagine, I was very scared. I needed a port and had one placed in a local Denver hospital.

I came to RIA in order to get a tunnel line put in so that I could easily receive IV therapy for a month. The procedure to implant the tunnel line was only five days after surgery, and my body was very painful and tender.

Greg Martin, MD explains the benefits of implantable ports. Why would someone want/need this service performed? Patients are referred to us for an implantable port when they are going to need chemotherapy or some other type of long-term medication.

What brought you to RIA Endovascular? My regular doctor referred me to RIA Endovascular for a thoracentesis. How was your patient experience with the doctor and clinic staff? I had a great experience at the clinic.

Get to know our team. How, when, and why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine? I was in a rollover car accident at age 21 and hospitalized for several weeks with numerous orthopedic injuries.

Hearing from our patients and learning from their experiences makes us even better. Laurie A. tells us all about her experience with the RIA team. What brought you to RIA Endovascular? I originally had a diagnosis of colon cancer.

Patients come to RIA Endovascular for many different reasons. One thing is always the same, our team is there to walk patients through the procedure and care for them every step of the way.

What brought you to RIA Endovascular? I’ve had a fistula for dialysis for about six years. I have had issues with it in the past that my nephrologist could solve. Now I had a severe narrowing in a vein in my shoulder that needed special attention.

When patients are excited about their results, they love telling us about it. What brought you in to RIA Endovascular? I came to the RIA Interventional Suite for a liver biopsy. I was so nervous coming in to my appointment.

What brought you to RIA Endovascular? My daughter Jessica was having severe pain and swelling in her legs due to DVT blood clots and total occlusion of both femoral veins. She was diagnosed with May Thurner Syndrome.

What brought you to RIA Endovascular? I have a history of kidney failure. I had a percutaneous fistula placed by Dr. Yee in the hospital. The follow up visits have been at RIA Endovascular Clinic and Interventional Suite.

What problems were you having before you came to RIA Endovascular? I have a history of a broken femur. I was in physical therapy for at least a year. Years later I started getting calf cramps on long walks.

What brought you to RIA Endovascular? I have a history of Crohn’s disease. This has caused multiple issues over the years. About three years ago, after having a vascular surgery with horrible outcomes, I was introduced to Dr. Nick Yee.

How did you hear about RIA Endovascular? I was recommended to RIA Endovascular by my spine surgeon. I needed a kyphoplasty and RIA Interventional Suite was his recommendation so that I could avoid a conventional “surgery”.

I am a dialysis patient because of my kidney failure and decided to have a fistula put in my arm. The first time I met Todd Kooy, MD, was at the hospital. He did the “mapping” for my fistula before my surgery.

How did you find out about RIA Endovascular? I was sent to RIA Endovascular by my hematologist. I had a completely closed-off inferior vena cava, severe back and leg pain, leg swelling and varicose veins. I was miserable and needed help.
